Some great advice on yard sales

29 August 2008 | Comments [0] »

Whenever I have a client who says she wants to do a yard sale, I always groan inwardly. I usually convince the client that a more expeditious route to achieving her goals would be to donate unwanted items or, in a couple of really cluttered cases, get a local auction service to come take away the stuff and sell it for her.

Knitting Olympics: The outcome

26 August 2008 | Comments [1] »

I have to admit I haven’t picked up the knitting needles since the Olympics ended. As I’ve written here, I achieved my goal of finishing the lace section of the Learn-to-Knit Afghan. I’d reset the goal to include finishing the entire afghan, but I fell short of the mark.

Ouch!

25 August 2008 | Comments [9] »

Yesterday I was taking my standard poodle, Kirby, for a walk and I tripped on a curb. Down I went onto the sidewalk, landing first on my knees, then my hands, then, unfortunately, my face (primarily nose and chin). Ouch!

Jott: Free no more

22 August 2008 | Comments [4] »

One of my favorite free services, Jott, is now out of beta and is no longer available as is free of charge. Jott allows you to dictate messages via your cell phone that are then emailed to you. I first blogged about it last January and posted a somewhat amusing cautionary note in March.

Olympic afghan: only two squares to go!

21 August 2008 | Comments [0] »

I powered through four squares of my Learn-to-Knit Afghan last weekend, in my quest to finish it before the end of the Olympics. I was aided immensely by the fact that I had two discs (six episodes) of Season Five of The Wire to keep my company. Oh, and the actual Olympics, on TV.

IKEA hacker: Blog of the Week

20 August 2008 | Comments [0] »

I’ve blogged before about products from the Swedish furniture manufacturer and retailer IKEA. I like the look and price of their products. I’ve found their furniture to be long-lasting (my husband works daily at a desk we bought at IKEA in northern Virginia back in 1988, and I bought current desk at the IKEA in Elizabeth, NJ in 1998). I don’t like having to put furniture together, but I that’s why I have friends (thank you, Sally!).

The intersection of high and low tech

18 August 2008 | Comments [0] »

One of the things I love about knitting is that it’s low tech. All my equipment is tangible, made of wood, metal, fiber, or plastic (unless you count the internet, where I shop, search for patterns and advice and network with other knitters).

All set for a weekend of Olympic knitting

15 August 2008 | Comments [1] »

I have to update you on my progress with the Knitting Olympics over at Ravelry which is officially known as the Ravelympics. The idea is that you commit to knitting something you consider a challenge during the time of the Summer Olympics. I’m very proud of what I’ve been able to achieve with some focused effort.

Commitments

12 August 2008 | Comments [0] »

Deadlines used to rule my life. When I was making my living as a writer, deadlines were absolutely everything. I didn’t start a story earlier than necessary to make my deadline. I don’t think in 12 years (and well over a hundred articles, along with eight books) I turned anything in early.

Knitting Olympics: Half-way there!

11 August 2008 | Comments [2] »

I promise I won’t write about knitting every day during the Olympics. I’m just so pleased with my progress that I have to report it. Tomorrow I’ll try to write something relevant to organizing.

What's stopping you?

7 August 2008 | Comments [0] »

Most of my clients have a to-do list for organizing tasks. (Some clients can’t figure out where to start, but we take care of that in the first session.) At the end of a hands-on organizing session, we talk about what they plan to do between sessions to further their goals.

I'm melting!

5 August 2008 | Comments [0] »

It’s hot and humid here in St. Louis. Yesterday’s high was like 98 with a heat index of 112, according to the local paper. We have central air, but our a/c is having a hard time keeping up with this heat.
