I gave a talk this week called Letting Go of the Tough Stuff. One of the points I made in that talk is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Many clients don’t like to part with items they don’t use or love because those items cost a lot to buy. Or they feel the item is worth something and they can’t just give it away, but selling it feels too complicated or labor-intenstive, so it gets put off.

Choice is a good thing. I think that having lots of options can feel very freeing. But when there are too many choices, it can be very hard to make a decision. I was reflecting on this today because I started out the day actually scheduling what I was going to do every hour. Today I’m playing catch-up after a visit to my family in Washington state. There’s a whole lot of disarray in the house and lots of email to catch up on and I found myself being pretty ineffective in the two days since I’ve been home.

When I talk with clients or give talks, I’ll often make this statement:
Clutter is nothing but delayed decisions.
And then I’ll urge folks to make decisions, rather than delaying them.

Every now and then I read a message on a forum or somewhere from someone who’s lost all their data in a computer crash. That person is kindly reminding people to back up their computers, to avoid the heartbreak of everything vanishing into thin air.
I’m happy to say this isn’t one of those messages. I haven’t suffered a computer crash. In fact, I’ve had no computer problems to speak of since I bought my MacBook in July of 2007.

Many of my clients have a difficult time making decisions. That’s not too surprising, since most of my clients are dealing with clutter issues and clutter is all about delayed decisions.
