Worth repeating: Traveling on an airplane with a puppy

6 May 2021 | Comments [0] »

I came across this post today and decided to repeat it. It’s got some solid information about flying with a puppy that some might find helpful now that we’re starting to fly more again.

Decluttering dog toys

15 April 2021 | Comments [3] »

Earlier this week, I repeated a post I’d written four years ago about the love my standard poodle, Bix, has for his toys. He gets two new toys every month from BarkBox and he’s also given extra toys by a friend whose dog gets BarkBox for the treats and doesn’t love the toys.

Worth repeating: Bix's favorite thing, BarkBox

12 April 2021 | Comments [0] »

I wrote this post four years ago, and Bix’s love for BarkBox has only grown. It’s caused quite a toy clutter problem, one that I worked on a couple of months ago. Later this week, I’ll write a post on how I decluttered Bix’s toys but today you can read about his beloved BarkBox, the reason his toys turned into an organizational challenge.

Worth repeating: Making homemade dog treats

13 July 2020 | Comments [0] »

I first wrote this post back at Christmas 2015. I’m proud of this cookbook, which is still selling fifteen years after publication. If the idea of using some of your extra at-home time to bake for your dog is appealing, I encourage you to try out some of the recipes!

Bix's favorite thing: BarkBox

19 April 2017 | Comments [0] »

My standard poodle, Bix, who is 18 months old, is a big-time player. He loves his toys with a fiery passion. Every night he instigates a game of fetch in the house and throughout the day he plays with his toys on his own. His very favorite fetch toy is an unassuming plush peanut.

Happy birthday to Bix!

17 October 2016 | Comments [0] »

I’m going to indulge myself today and write a post about my standard poodle puppy, Bix, who turned one yesterday. Just two weeks after he joined our family, when he was a rambunctious 10-week-old puppy, he totally disrupted my life, as is to be expected. At that time, I wrote a blog post about the lessons this tiny puppy had already taught me. He’s come a long way since then.

What a difference three months make!

Our standard poodle puppy, Bix, was eight weeks old when we brought him home from the breeder. My camera is chock full of photos of adorableness. Back in January, I posted a cute pair of photos of Bix on the couch looking out the window.

Your moment of cuteness

I’ve had difficulty finding time to blog, between the busy beginning-of-the-year client load and sharing puppy-raising duties with my husband.

Six things having a new puppy has taught me

28 December 2015 | Comments [1] »

My thoughts are all wrapped in my dog these days. We brought our standard poodle puppy, Bix, home from the breeder two weeks ago. He’s now ten weeks old and commands most of our attention. Emails have gone unread and unwritten. Blogging has slowed way down. I feel behind in everything.

Making homemade dog treats

23 December 2015 | Comments [0] »

It’s a little late in December to be offering up gift ideas, but perhaps this is a gift you can give to your dog (and yourself) without needing the excuse of a holiday.

It’s the You Bake ‘Em Dog Biscuits Cookbook, written by none other than yours truly. This cookbook is the last book I had published a dog writer before starting my organizing business in 2005. Ten years after publication it’s still selling.

Traveling on an airplane with a puppy

17 December 2015 | Comments [0] »

If you’ve wondered why I haven’t blogged in a week or so, I have an excellent excuse.

Allow me to introduce Bix.

He’s an eight-week-old standard poodle puppy who joined our family on December 13. Tomorrow he’ll be nine weeks old. He’s absolutely adorable, smart as a whip and well behaved (for a puppy). He’s endlessly amusing.

Instant gratification vs. the joy of anticipation

16 November 2015 | Comments [1] »

My husband and I are getting a standard poodle puppy on December 13. Our beloved poodle, Kirby, passed away on March 1 and since then, for the first time in 23 years, we’ve been living without at least one poodle in our family.

Got cabin fever?

11 December 2014 | Comments [0] »

A winter storm has hit both coasts of the US, bringing rain, snow, and generally unpleasant weather to much of the nation. If you find yourself trapped inside by the weather, here are some organizing tasks you can accomplish. (I published a similar list in a February 2010 post called snowed in?.)

Worth repeating: Simple DIY solution

6 November 2013 | Comments [0] »

I wrote the blog post below on May 9, 2012. That’s when we started making jerky treats for our dog, Kirby, after I learned that dogs were getting sick from eating jerky treats imported from China. Eighteen months later, the problem persists. According to an article in yesterday’s New York Times as of last month there have been 3,600 reports of illnesses related to the treats, and 580 deaths, almost all of them dogs.

Pictures speak louder than words

As I mentioned on Monday, our orange tabby cat, Joe, passed away a week ago. Friends have been asking us whether our standard poodle, Kirby, is missing his little buddy.

Simple DIY solution

My dog, Kirby, loves chicken jerky treats. I’d been feeding him Beefeaters Chicken Jerky Treats each day as an after-dinner treat. But then the reports came out about potentially tainted chicken jerky treats imported from China. While Beefeaters wasn’t one of the brands that, according to news reports, the FDA has issued warnings about, they are made in China, so we stopped feeding them.

Good neighbors make good fences

30 May 2011 | Comments [0] »

We all know the proverb that “Good fences make good neighbors.” In my life, I can switch that proverb around. It’s my great neighbor who’s making a fantastic fence.

Snowed in?

8 February 2010 | Comments [2] »

Here in St. Louis, we have just a little snow on the ground, with a little more expected this afternoon. Those of you on the east coast, however, are pretty much snowed in. I just communicated via email with a friend in Maryland who said they got two feet of snow and were out of power for 36 hours. Yikes.

Gratitude

29 November 2008 | Comments [0] »

Thursday was a wonderful, self-indulgent day for me. I don’t take part in the cooking or prepping part of Thanksgiving, just the eating and drinking. We eat every year at the home of dear friends, and my husband does all the cooking for our contribution. We didn’t go to dinner until 5:00. So while Barry worked in the kitchen, I got to sit in front of the TV and knit. Guilt free. It was wonderful. (I watched two movies on cable, The Sting which I’m seen at least 20 times and love every time, and Charlotte Gray the wonderful Cate Blanchett/Billy Crudup WWII movie, which I actually saw in the theater.)

Too pooped to blog

8 September 2008 | Comments [0] »

Last week I worked on an intensive multi-day, multi-organizer project. I was on my feet for eight hours at a time and when I got home I pretty much did nothing but eat and sleep (and drink wine). I didn’t even knit!

Instant calm

25 July 2008 | Comments [0] »

When I viewed this YouTube video of a man singing to a litter of Boxer puppies, who fall asleep one by one, I instantly felt calm and peace within. In case you’re not one of the 2 million people who have already viewed it, let me share it with you here. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Scary pet food

5 April 2007 | Comments [0] »

The current pet food recall has dog and cat owners scrambling to find something safe to feed their pets. It’s tragic. But it may have a silver lining. I’m hoping it will shine a light on the pet food industry and the fact that it’s virtually self-regulated, by the Association of American Feed Control Officials, the trade group that has established the industry standards.

When good things happen to good people

13 February 2007 | Comments [2] »

Last Thursday I spent about 15 hours in the car for a very good reason. I drove to Morrison, Tennessee, about an hour past Nashville, with my dear friend, Sally. We went there to pick up her dream dog, an eight-week-old puppy named —Clarence- Amos.
