These days, I’m spending less leisure time knitting and more time practicing hand lettering (and writing postcards to voters. But when my friend told me her daughter was pregnant, I just had to pull out my needles and knit my favorite go-to baby gift: the Harry Bear teddy bear, a free pattern from Berroco.

Thanks to my well-organized and well-stocked stash of yarn, I spend very little money on yarn and knitting supplies. Three years ago, I wrote about Ravelry, my secret weapon for saving money on what can be a very expensive hobby. This post is as true today as the day I wrote it, with one exception. There are now 3 million members of Ravelry!

Knitting Olympics update

I’ve chosen my project for the Ravelympics 2008 (on Ravelry, which I posted about last Thursday. According to the rules, you can actually work on completing a project you started in the past, one that’s been hibernating awhile. That Event is called WIP Wrestling. I’ll be playing on Team St. Louis.

Olympic knitting

Two years ago, during the 2006 Winter Olympics in , the Yarn Harlot organized the Knitting Olympics, in which participants cast on for a new knitting project during the Opening Ceremonies. Medal winners finished their project by the Closing Ceremonies.

As I’ve chronicled here, I’m a knitter. I knit pretty much every day, usually in the evenings, usually while watching TV. It’s a solitary pursuit, though my animals and my husband often keep me company.

Once a week, however (when I’m in town), I actually leave the house to knit.

I don’t think I’ve extolled the virtues of Ravelry, the exciting social networking website for knitters and crocheters here yet. The site is amazing—a fabulous resource for finding patterns, seeing what others are knitting, getting technical advice and “meeting” people with similar interests through its various groups
