St. Louisans: Find out how to dispose of stuff with RecycleWizard.com

Last week our NAPO chapter heard a program from the St. Louis County Department of Public Health about how to safely get rid of unwanted items. they introduced us to a new online tool called the Recycle Wizard. You just type in the name of a waste item and the wizard will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it.

Alternatives to gift wrap

I just left The Container Store. This time of year, their displays feature Gift Wrap Wonderland, where they have rolls upon rolls of beautiful gift wrap. Now, I love The Container Store, truly I do. But as I looked at all that wrap I thought to myself, “Why do people need to spend all this money and storage space just to wrap gifts?”

When I got home, I started thinking about alternatives to purchasing gift wrap. There are so many! This is the list I put together in about two minutes. Can you add anything to it?

Lighten the load this weekend

If you have expired or unwanted medications cluttering up your bathroom or kitchen, this Saturday, September 29 from 10 am to 2 pm is the semi-annual National Take Back Initiative, organized by the Drug Enforcement Agency. Between those hours you can drop off medications at a law-enforcement for proper disposal. Just click on the link to find disposal sites near you. The event is taking place nationwide.

A lot of my clients are perfectionists, and one of the things that keeps them from parting with an item is that they want to identify the perfect person or charity to receive it. They don’t want to clutter the landfill, so they let items clutter their homes instead.

St. Louisans: A chance to turn your unwanted items into art!

This weekend is the Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show a big craft show in St. Louis being held at Mad Art Gallery on 2727 South 12th Street. It starts Friday evening and runs all day Saturday and ends Sunday at 3 pm. Personally, I love craft shows. I so admire the craftiness, artistry, and enterprise of the people who sell things there.

So much of decluttering is about letting go. Disposing of things. Getting rid of excess.

But when you care about the environment, it can be difficult to let stuff go if it’s going to clutter up the environment. Sure, it’s easy to rent a dumpster and fill it up. Okay, not easy, but easier than caring where the stuff ends up. But if you’re committed to being kind to Mother Earth, then decluttering often involves extra steps.
