Using rewards as motivation

13 September 2023 | Comments [0] »

We have a stationary bike parked in front of a wall-mounted TV. This summer, I created the habit of working out with the bike while watching my summer-obsession TV show, S.W.A.T. on Netflix. I was going great guns until I went to Australia and my routine was disrupted. And now I’ve found it hard to motivate myself to get on the exercise bike. But I’ve found a solution that’s working for me!

Worth repeating: Getting and staying on task

14 July 2016 | Comments [0] »

Effective task management is a moving target for me. I’ve come to accept that I need to switch things up in order to keep myself engaged and get stuff done. So I vary my systems according to my need and mood. This post, originally published May 22, 2013, describes a sort of emergency intervention I use when I just can’t get myself to get anything done.

Getting and staying on task

22 May 2013 | Comments [0] »

For the last two days, I have had such a difficult staying focused and productive at my desk! My day yesterday was completely unstructured, which is sometimes a recipe for disaster for me. Without an appointment looming, it can be really hard for me to get started.

Turning temptations into rewards

7 September 2012 | Comments [2] »

It’s 4:46 pm and I’m just now writing today’s blog post. I meant to do it earlier in the day, but other things (like lunch with a friend and a haircut) took precedence. I also had promised to get answer reader questions for Rubbermaid by the end of the week and all of a sudden I was staring down that deadline.

Taking time for yourself

7 February 2011 | Comments [1] »

One of the biggest pieces of advice I give to my clients is to be kind to themselves. That self-care is so often lacking. For many of my clients (the majority of whom are busy women) the biggest gift they can give themselves is time alone. A bubble bath. A cup of tea and a novel. Stealing away to a matinee.

Practicing what I preach

I often tell my clients (and anyone else who will listen) how important it is to reward yourself. Most of us work so hard and we often don’t let ourselves take a break. Especially when it comes to big clutter projects, I think it’s really important to reward progress and not wait until everything’s finished before you let yourself have some fun.

Punishment versus rewards

26 May 2010 | Comments [2] »

Back in the days I was a pet writer and wrote about dog training, I wrote repeatedly on the effectiveness of rewards over punishment.

Why, then, am I a little surprised that my recent experiment in using the threat of punishment to get me to do something wasn’t a resounding success?

When is lounging around self-care and when is it sloth?

24 August 2009 | Comments [0] »

Last Monday I blogged about my glorious Sunday (the day before) during which I did nothing but watch movies, do crafts, read and nap. I was enraptured at the rejuvenation I felt after taking a day to myself. I stand behind that post.

A day to myself

17 August 2009 | Comments [0] »

I had a glorious day yesterday in which I placed no demands on myself. After working with clients the last couple of weekends, it was great to have a Sunday to do whatever I wanted to do. (I got my home-related chores taken care of on Saturday.)

I was home for a day and am now heading to Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania for my husband’s family reunion. Because of all the coming and going I haven’t had time to blog.

R&R - practicing what I preach

I encourage my clients (and Declutter Happy Hour participants) to be sure and take breaks and build in rewards when they’re working hard (on clutter or anything else).
