Ouch!

25 August 2008

Yesterday I was taking my standard poodle, Kirby, for a walk and I tripped on a curb. Down I went onto the sidewalk, landing first on my knees, then my hands, then, unfortunately, my face (primarily nose and chin). Ouch!

I dropped the leash, but Kirby, being a good boy, didn’t go anywhere. When I touched my face, I saw blood on my hand, so Kirby and I hurried home. I figured it wasn’t good when I walked past a woman who smiled at my dog, looked up and me, and looked horrified.

I have red scrapes on the end of my nose, the area between my nose and upper lip (which I just learned, thanks to Wikipedia, is called the “ergotrid”) and right in the middle of my chin. I also have a fat upper lip.

It didn’t hurt so much at the time and it doesn’t hurt much now, but what is hurting a little is my ego. I’m sort of loathe to go out in the world looking like this. I have to get my hair cut at my fancy salon today and I’m sort of dreading it. And I find myself grateful I don’t have any new clients this week.

I figure I’ll put an adhesive bandage over my chin and that will help. Since I know you’re dying to see it, I used PhotoBooth to take a picture this morning. Here it is:

I have sort of a Charlie Chaplin thing going on under my nose.

Of course, it could have been so much worse. I could have hurt my teeth, even broken my nose. My glasses could have poked into my face. This is all cosmetic and will have no lasting consequences.

With any luck by tomorrow I won’t be obsessed with my appearance and we’ll get back to regular programming here.

Janine, I’m so sorry about your spill. I hope you’re on the mend soon.

This will make you feel better. Back when I worked in “corporate America” I went out for lunch one day. Coming out into the bright sun (from the din of the indoors) I, like you, missed a curb. Unfortunately, I had on panty hose and heels, which didn’t hide the bloody knees that resulted from the spill. I didn’t have extra panty hose in my office, so I had to hobble across to Union Station (during lunch hour with bloody knees) to buy new hose. Ouch to the knees, but even more to the ego!

Feel better soon!

You paint quite a picture, Aby! Thanks for the empathy.

Good Grief! What a day you have had. I am so sorry for you; I’ll bet you are sore too.

And, yes, you are right, we are dying to see it. In this case a picture is helpful for your fan base to determine the next steps. A “POA” (plan of action).

Let me get the ball rolling~
do a lot of phone coaching this week and next.

Or, make up some really creative story about how it happened for sympathy. Have people do your laundry, wash and gas your car, clean the windows…

Geralin Thomas August 25, 2008 06:52 PM

Thanks for the sympathy, Geralin! Everyone at the hair salon was very sweet. A friend suggested saying that I was injured rescuing children from a burning building. I’m not sure my injuries are consistent with that, but it might be worth a shot!

A neighbor surmised it was from a biking accident, which sounds more impressive to tripping while walking the dog. Perhaps I shouldn’t have set him straight.

I am glad you are okay… I once walked right into a sign post, knocked off my glasses and almost broke my nose. I was so hoping that someone saw, but alas, there was no one around.

One of my favorite quotes… “It’s just a flesh wound!”

Thanks, Megan. I was really glad I didn’t break my glasses in this fall!

Janine, I hope you are feeling (and looking) better by now. That had to be scary. Has anyone wanted to know how the “other guy” looks? LOL.

Marita Perlak August 28, 2008 12:49 PM

Hi, Marita! I’m starting to heal—the sores are looking smaller and less disgusting. But people are still surprised when they see me! And, in fact, someone did ask what the other person looked like. Others are quick to assume it was Kirby’s fault (he was completely innocent). I bet you’re glad you’re thousands of miles away and didn’t have to look at me twice this week!

Janine, I’m so sorry to hear about your spill – and glad you’re not seriously hurt, and glad you’re on the mend.
