Worth repeating: A knitting project that makes me smile

My favorite definition of perfectionism

Join us for Declutter Happy Hour!

19 January 2021 | Comments [0] »

If you’re a long-time reader of this blog, you may remember Declutter Happy Hour. It was a teleclass that life coach Shannon Wilkinson and I created back in 2009. We did it a couple of times as a live teleclass and then morphed it into an ecourse before we retired it. We didn’t know it then, but it was a precursor to the podcast that Shanon and I now host, Getting to Good Enough.

In this presentation, Shannon and I will be talking about when to know you’ve put enough effort into something.

What kind of procrastinator are you?

9 July 2020 | Comments [0] »

I think most of us procrastinate at least sometimes. (If you never procrastinate, you can go ahead and skip this post.) I used to be a terrible procrastinator, back when I was a writer. Since becoming an organizer 15 years ago, I’m better about it. But there are still tasks I put off. They’re usually tasks I don’t think I’ll enjoy. If they don’t have a deadline I have really hard time getting started on them.

Set yourself up for success with your goals

19 December 2019 | Comments [0] »

I’m deep into thinking about my 2020 goals. There’s something about a year that ends in zero that makes it feel extra important. Maybe it’s because we’re starting a new decade, The Twenties. (It’s so bizarre that soon The Twenties will have nothing to do with flappers.) I love the process of setting goals for the new year and I really enjoy taking a whole day to work on my goals. This year, like last year, my big retreat day is December 26. I can’t wait!

A knitting project that makes me smile

24 January 2019 | Comments [2] »

It’s been quite a while since I blogged about knitting, but a recent finished project has making me smile so much I just had to share. As I’ve written here, I knit an afghan that took me about 12 years. It’s made from four colors of wool. I used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes for that project, in green, beige, burgundy and brown. I love the color combination and I still had some skeins of that yarn left over. I decided to use it to knit a felted cat bed for my friend Shannon’s beautiful (and large) young cat, Cleo.

As I’ve mentioned here before, I’ve started a podcast with my friend, Shannon Wilkinson, a life coach in Portland, Oregon. The podcast is called Getting to Good Enough and it’s all about overcoming perfectionism so you can do more of what you love.

We’ve started a feature, Q & A on the 5s, where each episode that ends in five will showcase questions from listeners (and our answers). We’ve set up the GTGE Hotline (413-424-GTGE) where you can call in and leave a message. We’ll address your question or comment on the air in the next Q&A on the 5s episode, using your voice from the voicemail.

Special help for procrastinators

27 April 2017 | Comments [1] »

Do you procrastinate on certain tasks? I used to be a dyed-in-the-wool procrastinator. When I was a freelance writer, I waited until the last minute to work on my magazine articles. Heck, I didn’t even start writing my very first book (in 1999) until the day after Thanksgiving and it was due on January 2! Take it from me, that’s nothing to be proud of.

Do you struggle to create (or maintain) order? You may need to declutter emotional barriers first.

Recently, a client of mine shared that she struggles with keeping her kitchen as clean and orderly as she’d like. It suddenly became a more pressing issue because some workers would be over in the next week to make needed repairs.

You can read all about it on her blog. In brief, between now and her birthday in mid-March, she’s exercising for 45 minutes, 45 times; she’s being still for 45 minutes, 45 times; she’s leaving 45 random love notes; and (here’s the part that could affect you), she’s offering to coach 45 people in 45-minute laser- coaching sessions for only $45.

I’m not so keen on New Year’s Resolutions. I think we tend to make them when we get caught up in the hopeful feelings that a fresh, new year brings. But I think they’re frequently not realistic. And we don’t give them enough time. And when one goes by the wayside, we give up hope on all of them.

A decade ago, Flylady told me to set my timer for 15 minutes and declutter. She told all of her followers, “You can do anything for 15 minutes.” I’ve put that into use over and over again through the years. And I blog about it a lot because it’s so true.

Announcing Declutter Happy Hour!

18 March 2009 | Comments [0] »

Recently, I’ve been blogging quite a bit about how hard it can be to get rid of clutter, not just because it’s hard work that’s difficult to find the time to do, but because of emotional barriers to the work, or unhelpful beliefs that get in the way.

It's tax time!

23 January 2009 | Comments [0] »

I can’t believe I’m thinking it’s tax time and it’s only January. I literally can’t remember the last time I filed taxes before April 15. I think it was in the 80s, when I filed Form 1040-EZ. Here’s a picture of Krista, Brandie, and me, taken by my fabulous friend and life coach, Shannon Wilkinson, who joined us.

Self-care

I’m always struck how clutter gets in the way of life. I have many clients who constantly feel an obligation to deal with their clutter. They plan to devote a weekend to decluttering, then they start to feel overwhelmed, so they don’t actually deal with it. (Until they call me.)

Have you tried a coach?

6 May 2008 | Comments [0] »

I was never one for organized athletics as a young person. I was on the sixth-grade girls’ basketball team at Green Park Elementary, but that was the only time I ever was under the tutelage of an athletic coach. (I know, very impressive.)
